It’s such a cool idea. The SSU had already tried a few times to hit strategic bomber aircraft like the Tu-95 using more 'standard', long-range drones - but it was difficult. S-400 missile system have become better at defending against such attacks. And more importantly, the standard radar systems at those locations are very effective at detecting mid-sized drones in the sky, giving plenty of time to prepare. I'd bet the original idea at SSU started with a seemingly dumb question like: "Can we use FPV drones to strike?" Someone probably replied, "No, it’s over 4000km away." And that’s when the Aha moment happened. Then came the brainstorming: how do we secretly deploy a massive number of drones near all the airbases - because you can't repeat the same operation twice. Genius hacking mindset! And such a carefully executed operation - it stayed hidden for 18 months! …more
